Psalm 49

Leader: My mouth shall speak wisdom. The meditation of my heart shall be understanding. Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of my persecutors surrounds me, those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?

People: Truly, no ransom avails for one’s life. There is no price one can give to God for it. For the ransom of life is costly, and can never suffice, that one should live on forever and never see the grave.

Leader: But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.

People: Do not be afraid when some become rich, when the wealth of their houses increases. For when they die they will carry nothing away. Their wealth will not go down after them.

O God, You care for us as the Good Shepherd, who cares for His sheep. You do not use us to enrich yourself, but You give us gifts that will enable us to bless others and bring us happiness too. Help us use Your gifts wisely and according to Your will. Save us from using our power and wisdom to take advantage of others. Forgive us when we have used Your gifts selfishly, and help us learn to share, even as You have shared with us. We thank You this day for the salvation we enjoy in Jesus Christ who prayed: “Our Father. . .”
