Spiritual Highs and Spiritual Lows — 2 Chronicles 7:1-10
There is also no question that after King Solomon began to turn God’s people away from Him by setting up high places for the idols of his many foreign wives that many people, and increasing numbers of people, began to experience spiritual lows.
Some of these people experienced spiritual lows as the result of being led further and further from the LORD as they and their family and friends turned to worshiping the idols that King Solomon set up around Jerusalem. If some of them recognized the cause of their spiritual lows and listened to the prophets God sent, perhaps they repented, returned to the LORD, began praising the LORD and rejoicing once again because “Truly He is good, truly His lovingkindness is everlasting.”
Others experienced spiritual lows as the result of their grieving over the wickedness of their family, friends, and many around them who had turned their backs to the LORD. In their sadness, they might never again have experienced the spiritual high of the two weeks of celebration when the glory of the LORD filled the LORD’s house, but they could still praise the LORD because they knew that “Truly He is good, truly His lovingkindness is everlasting.” And they would experience spiritual highs as they rejoiced and praised the LORD, because they would personally know and experience what no worshiper of an idol can experience — that God truly is good and good to them — that God truly loves them and will love them forever.
Many years later, the righteous worshipers of the true God; prophets such as Daniel, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah suffered along with the wicked when the Babylonians destroyed the temple and carried the Judeans off into exile, but they did not let their feelings, their surroundings, or their suffering determine whether or not they would continue praising and worshiping the LORD. They knew personally and from their study of the Scriptures that everything the LORD did in the discipline of His people expressed facts about the LORD; that “Truly He is good, truly His lovingkindness is everlasting.” No matter what happened, because they knew the LORD and because they knew about the LORD from the Scriptures, they rejoiced in the LORD and experienced spiritual highs, but probably not as high as other times.
You might ask your class about what can cause Spiritual Highs and Spiritual Lows, the cure for Spiritual Lows, and what they can continue to do as faithful followers of the LORD when they are feeling spiritually low because of circumstances around them or what is going on within them.
