God Knows What’s Best for Us — Leviticus 25

Have you ever heard of a law that requires us to do nothing? Yes, you probably have; it is the Sabbath law, a law that requires us to do nothing but rest. God actually commands His people to do nothing from time to time, because God knows what’s best and He knows we need rest.

As children, our mothers sometimes wanted us to take afternoon naps, which some of us often preferred not doing. But they knew what was best for us, and they knew what our little bodies and minds needed whether we knew it or not. Sometimes they might force us, with our little rebellious spirits, to lie down whether we wanted to or not to rest.

Likewise, our Heavenly Father, who created us through Jesus Christ, wants us to rest. He knows what our bodies, minds, and spirits need whether we know it or not. Indeed, God knows our structure and the structure of all people and all domestic animals; therefore, God wants everyone and every domestic animal to rest from time to time. He may not force us to do nothing and rest, but sometimes our lack of regular rest can become a problem for us and others.

As we learn more of the Bible and mature as Christians, we will be able to distinguish between the laws of God that we no longer need to obey and the laws we still need to obey. Some of God’s laws that we do not need to obey pointed to the coming of Jesus Christ and to what He would do — He fulfilled these laws. Other laws of God we still should obey. We do not obey God’s laws “in order to go to heaven,” for faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is the way to heaven, but because we are on the way to heaven we want to obey God’s laws. We obey these laws because God has given them to us for our own good. Indeed, the Bible tells us so. In Deuteronomy 6:24 in the ESV, we read, “And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day.”
