Our Eternal Redemption and Our Eternal Inheritance — Hebrews 9

The Bible promises an Eternal Redemption and an Eternal Inheritance to those who trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior (see Hebrews 9:12 and 9:15).

Everyone needs redemption. Redemption is the process of buying back something. If you sell something in a pawnshop, you can redeem it if you buy it back, but at a higher price than you sold it. Pawnshop redemption is not a perfect analogy, because the devil does not run a pawnshop of human souls and Jesus did not need to pay the devil anything to redeem us. The pawnshop redemption analogy can be used advisedly to explain that Jesus’ death and resurrection in some mysterious way redeemed all who trust in him as Lord and Savior from slavery to sin, from slavery to practicing evil, from slavery to the devil, from slavery to fear of death, and other results of sin.

Because everyone has sinned, everyone needs redemption. Just ask someone with a besetting sin, or an habitual attacking destroying sin, how easy it is to put it away from themselves and not practice it once again. Granted, without Jesus some have overcome some sins and bad habits, but only Jesus can deliver someone from ALL their sins and bad habits. Only Jesus Christ can free someone from ALL slavery to sin, ALL slavery to evil, ALL slavery to the devil, and ALL slavery due to the fear of death. Jesus Christ can even free people from ALL desires to begin practicing a sin once again.

People who follow Jesus Christ in faith have experienced enough deliverances from enough sins, and have had their conscience cleansed from enough guilt enough times, and have been given the assurance of forgiveness by Jesus enough times, to know that someday Jesus will deliver them from ALL sins and from ALL desires to sin and from the presence of the devil and ALL worldly temptations and ALL fear of death. The Bible calls this process sanctification, which is the work of the Holy Spirit in all who have consecrated their lives to following, serving, and doing the will of Jesus at all times according to the Bible (though in this life the believer’s consecration and obedience will not be perfect or complete). The process of sanctification will be completed with the believer’s glorification when we will be like Jesus in resurrected human bodies. Furthermore, those who follow Jesus know that their redemption and deliverance will last forever. Those who do not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior do not have a Biblical or reasonable assurance of a redemption and perfection of their human body, mind, and soul that will never end and continue throughout eternity.

Jesus has given an Eternal Inheritance to all He has given an Eternal Redemption. The Bible does not tell us much about our eternal inheritance. We do learn that through faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we have been adopted into the family of God; we are God’s children, and Jesus Christ is our Big Brother. Imagine the inheritance we will receive from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Brother when we remember that they created all that exists! As children of our Father God, we receive a multitude of blessings right now in this life. For example, the Holy Spirit leads us daily into wonderful relationships and opportunities to serve the God we love. Every good thing we receive now and forever comes from the hand of our loving God. Our inheritance from God is eternal! We can never exhaust it or spend all of it, and it can never be taken from us! In 1 Corinthians 2:9-10, Paul wrote, “But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him’ — these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.”
