“Learning a language is a lot like learning a trail.
The first trip is slow. The hundredth trip feels like home.”

— Old Man Caldwell

These lesson pages are built from our ranch stories so English learners can practice reading, listening, speaking, and writing with a single set of materials. TEFL tutors can use these lessons online or in a classroom.

Choose from the lessons below to open a TEFL lesson page. Each lesson works with a tutor or without one for self-study.

We recommend beginning with Lesson 1 because vocabulary and story knowledge build from chapter to chapter. For example, you will appreciate Morgan's story much more if you first read how he was rescued from the Roaring Rapids River.

Some lessons also connect to optional Bible studies and Christian values that helped shape life on the American frontier.

Self-Study Lessons Include

  • Listening for the big idea, then reading while listening.
  • Using the Vocabulary list and repeating key phrases aloud.
  • Answering Comprehension Questions in your own words.
  • Doing the Speaking Prompts (recording yourself if possible).
  • Finishing with a short Writing Task (5–10 sentences).

Tutor + Student Lessons Include

  • Following a simple flow: Warm-up → Input → Practice → Output.
  • Tutor pages provide teaching guidance and optional expansions.
  • Lessons can be run in 30–45 minutes or expanded to 60+ minutes.
  • Optional homework is included for students who want extra practice.

About these lessons

Each chapter includes a student lesson, a tutor guide, and a link to the original Roaring Rapids Ranch story. Students who want to improve their English vocabulary and learn English on their own can use these lessons and stories for self-study. Our stories are fictional, but we make every effort to stay true to the history of the American West in the 1880s and later. Many who settled the old West were family oriented and people of faith. Because Roaring Rapids Ranch is a Christian ranch, our stories often reflect the values of faith, honesty, hard work, forgiveness, and service to others that shaped many frontier communities.
