In Chapter 48, Jake sits at the kitchen table before dawn, surrounded by crumpled pages as he struggles to answer a heartbreaking letter from his younger brother Jim. Drought, sickness, debt, and the loss of the family farm have left Jim wondering whether the Lord has forgotten him. Jake knows what he wants to say, but after hours of trying, he still cannot find the words that will truly help.
Mary gently helps Jake see that Jim does not need a sermon made of fine-sounding words. He needs truth expressed through love and faithful action. Jake and Mary decide to invite Jim and his family west and help them begin again on the Circle J. Once Jake stops trying to write what merely sounds right and begins writing what is true from his heart, the words finally come.
Paul taught Timothy that the God-breathed Scriptures are profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness so that God’s servant may be equipped for every good work. The truth of Scripture does not only give us words to speak. It prepares us to recognize another person’s need, respond with wisdom and mercy, and put our faith into loving action. Jake’s letter becomes more than an answer on paper. It becomes the beginning of hope for a family who feared they had been forgotten.
Paul reminded Timothy to continue in what he had learned from the sacred writings. God’s Word makes us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus and equips us for every good work. Sometimes that good work is teaching or correcting. Sometimes it is sitting beside someone who is hurting, speaking a needed word of truth, or helping carry a burden that has become too heavy.
Jake could not explain every hard providence the Lord had allowed in Jim’s life, and he wisely refused to pretend that he could. Instead, he wrote what he knew to be true: Christ had not forgotten Jim or his family. Then Jake and Mary were willing to make that truth visible through sacrifice, generosity, and a new beginning. Scripture had prepared their hearts not only to offer comfort, but to do something faithful and loving.
Old Man Caldwell might say: "The Lord didn’t breathe His Word into this world just to fill a man’s head. He gave it to straighten his trail, strengthen his hands, and teach him what good work needs doing next."
